, – spaces & margins

“Because of the increase in wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this Gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world…then the end will come.”

                                             Matthew 24: 12-14

Okay, you know the debate rages about reading a book and seeing the movie. Which is better? If you asked me I’d say reading the book is always better in my opinion. Do you want to know why?

Books tell you what the characters are thinking. You are given descriptive details in the book that a movie just can’t capture. In other words, you loose a lot in translation because a movie tends to be constricted by many factors including time.

I’ve always been told to read between the lines when coming across details I don’t always understand. There are so many things in God’s Word that make you wonder what is going to happen next. Sometimes you wonder about some of the spaces in between chapters or even sentences that happened to the people in the Bible. Even a simple comma or hyphen can lead into direction that no one expected.

Here’s one place that I wonder what might have happened. The Bible talks about the “love of most growing cold,” then it says,  “The Gospel will be preached unto the end of the world, then the end will come.” What happened in between those two sentences?

Is there a great revival? Are those few whose love is warm, take the Gospel unto the ends of the world? Is the population so big that in comparison Christians are outnumbered? Is there a lot of complacency and then God convicts us? Puts the heat under our seat?

Something has to happen and I believe that it’s an intervention of the Spirit of God.  I am reminded again and again that this is the Lord’s working. He knows how to wrap up His story. What is our job? It is to remain faithful and share the Good News of Christ. Whatever I do in this life I pray it will become centered on that reality. It’s easy to get worried about the “what ifs” that I forget to focus on the “must dos”.

Lately, it seems as if the Lord can been cutting the fat in my life. I refer to the busyness of my life. I believe He wants me to concentrate on what is really important and let the rest ride. I should never be so busy that I neglect God and people whom He is reaching through me. That is enough to keep anyone plenty busy and their heart cannot turn cold.

I pray that the Lord keeps my ways simple, the crazier the world gets. He’s writing a story that is full of wonderful twists, turns, and unexpected developments.  I may not know what is going to happen in this life story but I do know that the Great Author wants us to all end with a happy ever after.
