“Everything that God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected.”
I Timothy 4:4
I love to watch shows about inventions and contraptions. It’s really pretty amazing to see where a lot of our modern conveniences got their start. Did you know that the first microwave was around in the 50’s? That’s right but, it was still experimental and pretty bulky for commercial use.
I’ve heard it said repeatedly that inventions take their form and function from something you might find in nature. The camera with its folding iris tries to imitate the function of our own eye. Columns that held up ancient Roman temples and frames in modern skyscrapers probably model their strength after the tough trunk of a tree and what it must support. Maybe someone saw the grasp of an eagle and thought about the claw on a hammer. Or they took the elephant’s nimble nose for the simple, yet amazing invention of a garden hose.
The list goes on and on. The fact is we are copying our Father in Heaven. He made us unique among all His creations. We have the ability to create with the materials God has provided. We also have patterns in nature to copy and create wonderful things that are amazing to behold. You know, many people may think that man shouldn’t have even touched nature. We shouldn’t try to create machines and gadgets but leave well enough alone. Maybe in a way we can honor God by the things we create. We are taking the designs He gave us and making things that show the creativity God has implanted in us.
If we begin to see things like that, then maybe even the title of this story should be changed. It doesn’t have to be man’s world or invention living separate from God’s natural world; rather they can live in harmony. If you are a creative person, give God the glory in whatever you design. Give the honor to His design and create wonderful, amazing things to help others. If I have read right many inventors have done that in their work. They have asked the Lord for wisdom when they couldn’t create, and He stepped in.
The Lord is our inspiration whether we invent, paint, design, or develop whatever we dream up. He is able to do what only He can do, and He wants to do it through me and you. Let Him use His ideas and create what is yet to be made. Don’t be like the man in the 1800’s who said, “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” That can’t be farther from the truth. Who knows maybe we’ll be inventing in eternity when it’s all said and done?
